Synthetic materials
Less polluting than leather?
Here is some information to help you see a little more clearly the composition of synthetic materials called imitation leather, often used in the making of vegan shoes or vegan leather goods .
What is Polyurethane PU?
PU is a polymer from the petrochemical industry which has qualities of elasticity and robustness .
It is an interesting material for making vegan shoes because it is breathable while being waterproof, which prevents excessive sweating. It is flexible and comfortable.
It is resistant to abrasion and stains. It is also free of phthalates and BPA (bisphenol A), known endocrine disruptors.
PUs manufactured in Europe are guaranteed by the OEKO-TEX 100 label , produced without CO2 emissions , their finish makes them breathable, antimicrobial and anti-mold.
Do not confuse PU with PVC which is more polluting and more toxic. It releases more volatile organic compounds and releases toxic components (such as hydrochloric acid) when burned.
What is microfiber?
Microfiber is made from a blend of synthetic fibers and
natural, often polyester and cotton, which are bonded together by the hot application of a polyurethane resin.
It can give different appearances depending on the mixture that composes it: either a smooth appearance close to leather, or a more or less soft “peach skin” appearance, which can be reminiscent of nubuck. Microfiber offers the advantage of very good breathability and does not deform .
Microfibers made in Europe are guaranteed by the OEKO-TEX 100 label . They are produced without CO2 emissions , their finish makes them breathable, antimicrobial, and anti-mold.
