Fashion Revolution: How to revolutionize fashion?

What is the Fashion Revolution?

This week is Fashion Revolution .
A little flashback to understand why and how this movement was born:
On April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, a building housing several garment factories in Bangladesh, collapsed, killing 1,138 people and injuring more than 2,500. This tragedy had sadly highlighted the deplorable working conditions of garment workers working for well -known brands.

Since then, on each anniversary of the disaster, FASHION REVOLUTION DAY invites consumers, brands and manufacturers to take part in the change to revolutionize the fashion industry .

Each of us, at our own level, has an impact. Through our choices, we have the power to change fashion and play a role in this Fashion Revolution .

Who made my clothes? My shoes? My bags?

For many years, we have been used to finding cheap clothes in major brands. Very often, we have little information on how these items were made and especially by whom and in what conditions!

Zebra Vegan Shop is participating in the Fashion Revolution movement by choosing to only reference ethical brands . and transparent who also want to change things. Brands that care about the well-being of workers. This involves manufacturing in Europe , in countries where workers' rights are applied. They choose to design their shoes and/or bags in small workshops that highlight the know-how of the workers and guarantee decent wages .

who made my clothes

A s a consumer, you can challenge brands to ask them for more transparency. The Fashion Revolution movement invites you to question brands about the origin of their clothes.
To do this, simply choose a piece from your wardrobe , wear it and take a photo of yourself. by showing the label and posting the photo on social media with the hashtag #WhoMadeMyClothes

Leather, a problematic material

Revolutionizing fashion also means choosing materials that are as harmless as possible to humans, animals and the planet . This is clearly not the case with leather .
The first victims of the leather industry are of course the animals, who after having lived in terrible conditions from intensive farming, end up in the slaughterhouse. Their skins are then tanned to prevent them from rotting. Tanning is problematic: it is a chemical process that uses products that are toxic both to the health of workers and to the environment.
In fact, chromium is used in most tanning processes and can cause respiratory ailments and skin problems. It pollutes water when released into the environment.

leather tannery

It is for all these reasons that Zebra Vegan Shop only lists certified vegan brands, all the shoes and bags you will find here are leather-free .

Just like me, the brands I choose are concerned about the living world in its entirety and make sure to use less polluting materials that are Oeko Tex certified . A label that guarantees that they do not contain chemicals that are harmful to health.

How to consume fashion more responsibly?

You love fashion, dressing well and shopping are a way to please yourself ? There is no reason for this to change, fashion and ethics are compatible ! You can totally find your happiness in ethical fashion  without compromising your style.
Simply, in fact, changing your consumption patterns requires some adjustments, in particular looking at labels, looking for information on brands, deciphering materials, comparing... this can be discouraging sometimes, I grant you .
This is why on Zebra Vegan Shop I do a bit of the work for you since all this research is done in advance by me and I only present to you articles that are part of a Fashion Revolution approach!

Furthermore, I have some ideas that can help you see things more clearly:

  • The guide to eco-responsible fashion

This book written by Natacha Ruiz and Alice Lehoux is a bit like the bible of eco-responsible fashion ! It gives information in a very simple way to better understand the production chains, the different materials, their impacts etc… It gives you all the keys that will allow you to find which fashion corresponds to your values: http://www.modeecoresponsable.com/

  • The G ood Goods

It is a media dedicated to responsible fashion that aims to transform this industry. You will find advice on how to dress ethically , a brand directory and also a map of committed stores. Their site is truly a mine of information: https://www.thegoodgoods.fr/

  • IznowGood

On her blog , her YouTube channel, and her Instagram account, Céline , aka Iznowgood, talks to us about ethical fashion with kindness and accuracy. She seems to know the subject like the back of her hand and introduces us to some lovely committed brands . She also regularly makes “brand decoding” videos on YouTube.
On its site I recommend that you test the “IZ Brand Manager” it is a sort of search engine that allows you to find articles by checking several ethical criteria that are important to you.

There you go! It's up to you to make the Fashion Revolution with us!

I end with this extract from the manifesto that you can find on https://www.fashionrevolution.org :

We are Fashion Revolution. We are designers, creators, producers, makers, workers, consumers. We are journalists, academics, authors, entrepreneurs, brands, retailers, trade unionists and politicians. We are the industry and the public. We are global citizens. We are a movement and communities. We are you. We love fashion. We don’t want our clothes to exploit people or destroy our planet. We demand a radical and revolutionary change in habits and mindsets. This is our hope, this is your hope…
